Ion Exchange
Ion exchange is a treatment procedure in which ions are
exchanged between a solution and an ion exchange resin,
either cationic or anionic. It is a reversible process and the
resin can be regenerated for re-use. This process is
extensively used for water softening in industrial and
residential applications.
Demineralisation and deionisation of process and boiler
feed-water and the production of pharmaceutical process
water are some of the common applications of ion exchange
in industry, while de-carbonation and softening are
commonly used for the preparation of potable and process
water. Ion exchange resins have various specialist
applications, for example, metals recovery, arsenic removal
and heavy metals removal.
